A city of mutual multicultural learning

Kordelio-Evosmos is a city located in the north-west of the Thessaloniki Urban Area. It was created in 2011 by merging two municipalities. Today, despite the city’s rich industrial past, Kordelio-Evosmos is primarily active in the food processing industry.

Vision and Motivation

Kordelio-Evosmos will promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a paradigm for a balanced and better quality of life, and to promote universal access to learning, quality education, gender equality, civic participation and professional development.

Challenges and Goals

Recently, the city has seen a steadily increasing flow of immigrants from eastern countries, estimated to total just over 10,000. Coupled with the current crisis, this has caused numerous social and economic setbacks. In addition, industrial decline in the area has led to a significant overall unemployment rate in excess of 25 per cent. Youth unemployment is even higher.

Plan and Implementation

The municipality aims to tackle these challenges by establishing three core pillars:

  1. inclusive learning;
  2. ICTs; and
  3. sustainable development.

Being a multicultural community, Kordelio-Evosmos has designed a variety of programmes for mutual exchange, helping immigrants to integrate and citizens to understand them. The city’s Youth Information Centre and Municipal Youth Council have been set up to ensure that municipal policies better reflect young people’s concerns. Second Chance Schools target young school dropouts and prepare them for work. ICTs are being used to promote universal access to learning, quality education, gender equality, civic participation and professional development. Furthermore, Kordelio-Evosmos has developed seminars, art projects and festivals to raise citizens’ awareness of the essential role of sustainable development.
