The Global Alliance for Literacy within the Framework of Lifelong Learning (GAL) seeks to bring together key stakeholders and partners committed to building a more literate world through synergistic, innovative action. It will be launched by the Director-General of UNESCO on 9 September 2016 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, during this year’s International Literacy Day celebration.
This initiative will be coordinated by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in Hamburg, and comprises the UNESCO Member States, inter-regional organisations, United Nations’ (UN) specialised agencies and institutes as well as donors, participants from the private sector, civil society and others. Participation in the Alliance will be based on the commitment to contribute to a coherent action plan designed to foster literacy and sustainable development. GAL will, as a multi-stakeholder partnership, stimulate and promote collaborative programmes which connect literacy with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Agenda.
