Selection of Effective Adult Literacy and Numeracy Programmes

This website will give access to an initial selection of effective adult literacy and numeracy programmes. Included are all 14 programmes (mainly from Africa) that were selected for presentation at the

UNESCO Regional Conferences in Support of Global Literacy
Renewing Literacy to Face African and International Challenges
10 – 12 September 2007, Bamako, Mali

Further programme descriptions from all regions of the world will be added in the following weeks, as this is an ongoing and constantly growing collection of effective programmes to be shared with interested policy-makers, researchers and practitioners active in the field of literacy and non-formal education.

In a next step a database will be set up, which will provide a global platform for information provision and knowledge exchange about ongoing effective adult literacy and numeracy programmes worldwide. This website and the future database will support UNESCO’s role as a clearinghouse in adult literacy and numeracy and will complement the efforts of the UNLD and LIFE by responding to the demands of UNESCO Member States for innovative and state-of-the-art evidence that can inform and help improve their literacy policies, strategies and practices.

The main objectives are:

The information contained in this website and in the future database will consist of programmes that are of interest to a broader audience. The information on effective programmes is carefully compiled and edited by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL). Where available, links to contact persons and additional information are provided.

It is intended that UIL experts will visit some of the programmes selected or other promising programmes to ensure the ongoing credibility, quality and relevance of the programme descriptions and to provide more in-depth insights on results and lessons learned.

We look forward to your comments and further contributions, especially for adding programmes from countries or for topics that are currently absent or under-represented.
Your contact person at UIL is Lisa Krolak (l.krolak@unesco.org).
