UIL Supports Eritrea in Strengthening Adult Education

On the occasion of the International Literacy Day celebrations on 7 and 8 September 2013 UIL participated in a two-day national meeting in Eritrea that was attended by adult education officers from the national level and from all six districts in Eritrea, as well as by local NGOs and associations.

The meeting aimed at reviewing the progress and analysing key challenges in adult education and also provided the ground for networking and sharing of experiences among participants. The meeting was marked by a highly participative approach and an active involvement of participants. Additionally, the Minister of Education was present throughout the whole conference.

UIL discussed with the Department of Adult Education and Media its support to Eritrea, which is currently concentrating on the review and finalization of the National Adult Education Policy. In the future, UIL’s will contribute to developing community learning centres, mechanisms to assess and recognize learning outcomes and systematic data collection, as well as a national survey on literacy.

Together with the Department of Adult Education and Media and the UNESCO Office Nairobi, UIL also had the opportunity of a separate meeting with the Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom, in which the General Secretary of the Eritrean National Commission for UNESCO, Ms Mehret Iyob, was also present. The Minister expressed his sincere thanks to UNESCO for the support, and particularly voiced his appreciation for UIL’s contribution.
