How can a learning city apply for the Award?

Any city that wishes to apply for the UNESCO Learning City Award must be a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. To apply for the Award, cities must submit the following documents to their countries’ National Commissions for UNESCO:

  • an Award Application Form;
  • a signed Consent Form for use and distribution of materials; and
  • any necessary additional materials (articles, videos, etc.).

Each National Commission will nominate up to three cities in their country and forward the cities’ application material to the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL).

Cities may apply for the UNESCO Learning City Award 2019 in Spring 2018.

How are Awardees selected?

UIL will review and shortlist the nominations it receives from National Commissions. A jury appointed by UNESCO, which comprises members of UIL’s Governing Board and represents all UNESCO regions, will then select the Awardees. Further information can be found in the Award Concept Note.
