Transforming youth from vulnerable to victorious
Participants including 120 government officials, youth from vulnerable backgrounds and civil society stakeholders from 17 countries convened at the International Policy Forum on Literacy and Life Skills Education for Vulnerable Youth through Community Learning Centres (Jakarta, 20 – 22 August 2013) to share their experiences in policy development and programme implementation. They discussed the methods and effects of community-based learning initiatives addressing young people who could not complete basic education.
The stories of young participants whose lives have been transformed through community-based learning centres yielded evidence of the impact of quality non-formal education opportunities. Additionally, field visits to several community learning centers in Jakarta gave the participants a vivid impression of the centers where they could interact with learners and teachers.
Participating countries and institutions are expected to use lessons learned and evidence shared to craft effective policies and programmes responding to the needs of vulnerable youth.
This forum was ultimately made possible with the generous support of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia.
