The United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will take place from 9 to 18 July 2018 in New York City, USA. The forum, whose theme this year is ‘Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies’, is a central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Particular focus will be paid to select SDGs, including SDG 11, which calls on Member States to ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.’
Learning cities are central to this important UN forum: in particular, an event on 10 July 2018 entitled ‘Learning cities: Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies through education’ will look at the intersection of SDG 4 (inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all) and SDGs 11 and 12 (sustainable production and consumption). It will present the pivotal role played by local governments and learning cities in achieving the aforementioned SDGs and thereby securing sustainable and resilient future societies.
The learning cities event is organized by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in cooperation with the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO), the Asia South Pacific Association for Basic and Adult Education (ASPBAE) and The United Methodist Church.
