Ministers of education and training, senior representatives of bilateral and multilateral development agencies, civil society organisations and youth representatives will gather at the forthcoming 2012 Triennale on Education and Training in Africa. They will discuss how to design and implement an effective response by education and training systems to promote critical knowledge, skills and qualifications for sustainable development in Africa.

The event is co-organised by the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) and the Burkina Faso Ministry of Education and Literacy in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso,  from 12 to 17 February. The following background papers have been contributed by UIL.

· “Study on key issues and policy considerations in promoting lifelong learning in selected African countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda and Tanzania)”, by Shirley Walters (external UIL consultant from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa), Jin Yang (UIL) and Peter Roslander (UIL).

· “Recognition and validation of non-formal and informal learning, and NQFs: critical levers for lifelong learning and sustainable skills development: Comparative analysis of six African countries”, by Shirley Steenekamp (South African Qualifications Authority) and Madhu Singh (UIL).

UIL also collaborated with the ADEA Working Group on Non-Formal Education in preparing a strategic orientation and guidance framework for lifelong learning and a study on education for young nomadic people.
