Al Daayen: an agricultural, educational, recreational and economic hub

Located within the periphery of Doha, the city of Al Daayen in Qatar has emerged as an agricultural, educational, recreational and economic hub. Its rural areas have committed to sustainable agriculture, while its urban areas host universities, schools and sports centres, as well as the Energy City.

Vision and Strategy

Through lifelong learning initiatives, we seek to spearhead Qatar’s efforts towards achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the SDGs, especially those concerning economic growth, social development and environmental management. To support our city’s lifelong learning journey, we look forward to joining the GNLC to exchange ideas, share best practices and overcome challenges together with the network’s members. Our lifelong learning strategy is based on fostering sustainable economic and environmental development, and on enhancing cultural and sporting facilities.  

Policies, Plan and Implementation

Sustainability and health

• Al Daayen carries out food safety inspections; encourages physical activity through the building of parks, health centres, and pedestrian areas; and promotes green building concepts in the areas of architecture, agriculture and the environment. Fines have been introduced to deter excessive potable water use, and residential areas are illuminated to improve safety.

Equity and inclusion

• The Al Shafalah Centre provides education to children with special needs, and a permanent centre is being established to provide learning opportunities for older people, with the aim of enhancing social inclusion. A community support team is also being set up for the establishment of a lifelong learning centre.

Decent work and entrepreneurship

• Decent work and entrepreneurship are integrated into the city’s learning strategy. The Al Dayeen Service Centre provides municipal services to the public. The Al Mazrouah initiative promotes the sale of local agricultural produce, and local businesses are encouraged to sell their products through traditional markets in order to support families in need.

Good practices

Lusail light rail project

• With 33 km of tram lines, this network will provide sustainable transport for people across nineteen districts of Lusail City. It seeks to reduce traffics jams and decrease CO₂ emissions.

Olympic cycling track

• Extending over 33 km, this 7 m-wide Olympic cycling track will host international sports competitions as well as providing a safe track space for city cyclists to promote a healthier lifestyle. The track has been designed to accommodate speeds of 50 km/h, and has 80 bike racks, 100 benches and 20 rest areas.

Plant a million trees project

• In collaboration with school and embassies, this project seeks to preserve the environment by planting a million trees, which will provide the city with a green canopy.
