Connecting economic power with inclusive community learning
As an IT city, Gumi is not only a pioneering industrial city; it is also one of the Republic of Korea’s most important production and trading centres.
Vision and motivation
Developing a learning culture for workers and businesses alike is important for an industrial city that is home to numerous enterprises. Most workers and businesses are committed to creating an educational environment that is suited to their needs. The IT city of Gumi aims to construct a lifelong learning city through its network of lifelong learning agencies.
Challenges and goals
One of our main goals is the revitalization of communities through lifelong learning. The city’s economic power will be enriched through measures designed to ensure its sustainability. Learning plays a crucial role. The municipality will also use the Learning Cities programme to create a wider culture of lifelong learning involving all stakeholders.
Plan and implementation
The city has already implemented a number of activities in order to support its development as a Learning City. First, the city is revitalizing communities through the establishment of lifelong learning opportunities. Secondly, it has developed the Study Circle Support Programme and the Lifelong Learning Village Development Programme. In addition, the city of Gumi has established itself as a ‘Networking City’ that promotes a citizen-centric culture of lifelong learning.
The local government has established an educational body to lay down relevant regulations and lead lifelong learning initiatives such as the Korean Lifelong Education Association.
