Konya connects centuries of history with the present. It has been the cradle of many civilizations and is still enriched with the resulted cultural accumulations.

Vision and Motivation

Konya has high motivation and a wide range of social concepts to become a learning city. Due to a growing demand from the residents, the city attaches high importance to informal learning. Citizens in Konya are eager to learn and improve themselves.

Challenges and Goals

People in Turkey already have their mandatory education when they graduate from high school. However, many of them then still want to continue learning and need appropriate opportunities.

Within the learning cities concept, Konya will also face the challenges of creating a widespread culture of learning, and establishing more learning opportunities in the workplace.

Plan and Implementation

Many activities in Konya have been provided for learners who are interested in informal learning after their formal education programs. The city has vast informal actions for those who do not study at university or who are housewives, retired or disabled people. Konya Metropolitan Municipality has been working on getting its citizens more educated since 2004. Konya’s vocational education course, called KOMEK, has had many learning activities for lifelong learners. So far, with KOMEK the municipality has supplied many people with further education.
