Building a Learning City for the evolution of society
Pampilhosa da Serra is situated in the Coimbra District. It is a sub-region of Pinhal Interior Norte in Portugal’s Centro Region, and currently comprises 8 parishes. It has established itself as a municipality that ‘inspires nature’: a good place to live in, invest in, visit and stay.
Vision and Motivation
The Learning City concept acknowledges the importance of learning, promoting inclusion, striving for prosperity and fostering sustainability. These are the tenets that motivated Pampilhosa da Serra to join the Global Network of Learning Cities. The city believes that modern challenges can only be met by promoting learning, which in turn empowers individuals to overcome adversity. The Learning City concept both motivates and facilitates action in this regard.
Challenges and Goals
Pampilhosa da Serra considers the provision of suitable and sufficient employment opportunities to be crucial. Furthermore, it is working to improve opportunities in the areas of continued and lifelong learning and education.
Plan and Implementation
Pampilhosa da Serra sees education as fundamental to the evolution of society. As a result, it is implementing a local educational policy (covering formal, informal and non-formal learning) that involves all of the relevant stakeholders. This educational policy is underpinned by a number of guiding principles and is designed to be dynamic, interactive, sustainable, inclusive and responsible. The city’s main aims are to promote intergenerational relations and intercultural dynamics; prevent school drop-outs and social exclusion; promote various training initiatives to boost qualifications and employability; create an effective community network; facilitate access to information; and expand the use of new information and communication technologies across all ages and social groups.
