Learning with and from nature

Yeonggwang is the only area where Korea’s top four religious and cultural traditions co-exist.

Vision and motivation

The vision is to construct a lifelong learning city together. Yeonggwang’s development plan for a lifelong learning city tallies with the mayor’s electoral pledges. In order to promote its slogan – ‘A thousand years of light’ – the city has laid the foundations for fostering a learning lifestyle based on natural resources.

Challenges and goals

The goal is to create a Yeonggwang where citizens can live well, and to turn them into lifelong learners by creating relevant jobs. The aim is also to develop a way of life centred on natural resources, whereby inhabitants learn from living in a green and environmentally friendly city.

Plan and implementation

Yeonggwang’s holy sites will be harnessed to advance the city’s history training programme through the inclusion of accurate historical data. Furthermore, the city will provide opportunities for inhabitants to participate in social activities, as well as support for women on a career break and retirees. By drawing on Yeonggwang’s unique characteristics to create a programme of civic engagement, the city aims to create new jobs and establish a lifelong learning community. Efforts will be made to expand literacy education provisions as a means of increasing the basic standard of living and improving people’s ability to communicate with the outside world.
