The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, the UNESCO Cairo Office and UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) will organize a hybrid side event, ‘Greening TVET, Adult Learning and Education’, at the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) on 9 November 2022. The event will shed the light on the importance of TVET and adult learning and education (ALE) for climate action.
Citizens worldwide – no matter their age – must be empowered with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to demand and support the green transition of our societies, as advocated in the Education for Sustainable Development for 2030 framework as well as enshrined in SDG Target 4.7, and, indeed, in the entire 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Climate change mitigation requires a dedicated and comprehensive lifelong learning system, strategies and concrete action plans, at local, national and regional level, that place ALE at the core. It also demands strong cross-sectoral and inter-ministerial partnerships to deliver ALE programmes aimed at raising awareness and equipping all individuals with the skills and knowledge to lead the transformation to a sustainable future.
The side event will highlight the role of ALE and TVET and the importance of a targeted strategy and partnership in ALE and TVET provision for a sustainable and green future. It will also showcase good strategic practices at national/local, institutional and individual level (from the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, the UNEVOC Network and the UNESCO ESD Network).
