As Secretariat of the Global Alliance for Literacy within the Framework of Lifelong Learning (GAL), the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) is organizing the annual general meeting of its members on 10 September 2019, in Paris. The meeting will take place at UNESCO HQ, against the backdrop of International Literacy Day celebrations and the International Conference on ‘Literacy and Multilingualism’.
Country representatives of GAL meet annually to discuss the current activities and future steps of the Alliance. 20 countries with adult literacy rates lower than 50% and the E-9 countries in which the majority of adults with low-level literacy skills live are the members of the Alliance.
Following the discussions and recommendations of country representatives at the GAL Policy Forum meeting in November 2018 in Mexico, the Alliance Secretariat has led the implementation of the following three areas of action:
- Initiate a mapping activity of literacy initiatives covering the GAL countries in order to a) improve GAL stakeholders’ (inter-sectoral) collaboration for literacy, and to b) enhance knowledge creation and sharing for evidence-based policy design and implementation.
- Conduct a study on the estimation of the costs of achieving SDG 4.6 in GAL countries.
- Develop a GAL Strategy for 2020–2025.
The objectives of this general meeting will be to inform country representatives of the initiative’s recent developments as well as to define the strategic focus of GAL.
A draft of the 2020–2025 GAL strategy will be presented for discussion and a timeline will be approved.
Attendance by invitation only. Partners will be selected and invited.
