The COVID-19 pandemic has caused major disruption to education, at every level, right across the globe, but it has also highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of lifelong learning in supporting societies to build the capacities necessary to cope with and respond to such crises. Equal and inclusive access to digital opportunities is key to realizing lifelong learning.

On 14 October 2020, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) together with UNESCO Headquarters hosts a special session on the theme of ‘Technology-enabled futures of lifelong learning’ as part of the UNESCO Mobile Learning Week 2020. Discussions will be based on the recent UIL report, Embracing a culture of lifelong learning, which calls on UNESCO Member States, technology companies and other stakeholders to ‘place digital technology at the service of lifelong learning for all’, and recognize it as an important public good, by 2050.

The session will facilitate interactive and provocative debate, involving different sectors, on whether and how our world can achieve wide recognition that access to technologies should be treated as a common and a public good, and galvanise the wide, cross-sectoral support required to realize this vision. It will culminate in a set of recommendations and necessary actions to move towards a future in which technology-enabled lifelong learning for all is a reality.
