World Teachers’ Day – Youth and adult literacy educators

  • Date: 6 October 2020
  • Where: online event (France)

This year, UNESCO celebrates World Teachers’ Day with a series of virtual events on the theme ‘Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future’. As part of the event series, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and the UNESCO Sections for Teacher Development and of Youth, Literacy and Skills Development will host a special virtual session, entitled, ‘Youth and adult literacy educators: status, challenges and opportunities towards professionalization’, on 6 October 2020.

In a time of massive disruption to literacy learning and a rapid shift to distance learning, youth and adult literacy educators have been on the frontline in sustaining and promoting quality lifelong learning. Despite tremendous challenges, many have played an important role during the COVID-19 lockdowns by flexibly deploying alternative modes of teaching and learning using radio, television, computers, mobile phones, print materials and open learning spaces. They have demonstrated their leadership, dedication, resilience, creativity, and mutual support in adjusting curriculum, adapting learning materials, developing online courses, and interacting with youth and adult learners by using the most relevant devices at their and their learners’ disposal.

The focus of the virtual session on 6 October will be on the challenges of and opportunities for professionalization of youth and adult literacy educators and strengthening their professional capacities during and beyond the COVID-19 crisis. The panel brings together educators, researchers, national policy-makers, and representatives of international civil society organizations. They will discuss the motivations, status, working conditions and professional development opportunities of educators who work in youth and adult literacy programmes.

6 October from 10:00 to 11:30h (GMT +2)
