Glossary on youth and adult education for the Latin American Region

16 May 2012

With the firm belief that there should be commonly-recognized and agreed-upon understandings and operative definitions in youth and adult education, without which confusion and lack of precision will continue to hamper policy and practice in the region of Latin America, UIL agreed to develop a glossary together with the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI).

Both the national reports and the five regional summary report prepared for CONFINTEA VI have highlighted the importance and necessity of clarifying the main concepts used in the youth and adult education field. Subsequently, the regional preparatory CONFINTEA VI meetings have underlined the importance of the task.

To start developing the glossary, a working meeting took place in Asunción, Paraguay, from 22 to 23 March. In cooperation with two regional experts, OEI and UIL produced the time table, a list of possible terms to be defined as well as the format of the structure of the glossary.

The glossary is envisaged as an easy-to-use (not encyclopedic) tool that will provide a selection of around 100 of the most significant and frequently used youth and adult education terms and concepts in the region.

All the terms will be complied in Spanish; with translation into Portuguese. The glossary is planned to be ready in both languages in November 2012.
