Emerging Trends in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

16 March 2015

The International Conference on Emerging Trends in TVET: Vision 2025 took place in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, from 18 to 20 February 2015. The event was organized by the Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE) in collaboration with the UNESCO New Delhi Office, UNEVOC and UIL.

The aim of the conference was to provide a forum for decision makers to improve strategies for delivering TVET under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). Addressing the challenges India faces in achieving the ambitious target of skilling 500 million people by 2022 was also an important theme. More than 200 participants, including policymakers from India and international representatives from eleven countries, took part in the conference.

Representing UIL, Ms Madhu Singh, Senior Programme Specialist, emphasized that research on TVET needs to take into account the social dimensions of TVET rather than concentrating on a very narrow understanding of TVET as something that sells on the labour market.  Ms Singh also recommended that TVET research be made an academic discipline in universities and that regional cooperation be enhanced through joint research projects.
