Many cities have started to take concrete actions to implement outcomes of the International Conference on Learning Cities hosted in Beijing, China in October 2013. To enhance dialogue between cities and regions on a global scale, the Coordination Team of the Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) at UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) is collecting best practices to help local authorities deepen their understanding of learning cities. In turn, this will improve the function of learning facilities and their use of resources. The UIL team will compile a series of cases on building learning cities that promote and share knowledge, ideas and experiences on such vital topics such as enriching human potential, fostering lifelong personal growth, promoting equality and social justice, maintaining social cohesion and creating sustainable prosperity.

To present cases in a comparative way, the UIL team has designed a template that covers the most relevant aspects of the learning city development process. After the data-gathering process, the UIL team will finalize the resulting case profiles, make them available in English, French and Spanish and upload them onto the GNLC Website. The case studies will also be helpful for advocacy and communication purposes. To know more about the case studies, please contact
