At the Kominkan-CLC International Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (Okayama, Japan, 9-12 October 2014), UIL staff presented the Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) to over 650 policymakers and practitioners of community-based learning from 29 countries. The Okayama Commitment 2014 – Promoting ESD beyond DESD through Community-based Learning adopted at this Conference expressed a commitment to collaborate with the GNLC to advance lifelong learning for sustainable development beyond the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
A frequent question asked in relation to the GNLC is why the network focuses on urban communities and ignores the need to build lifelong learning environments for rural populations. The ‘cities’ in the GNLC include communities varying in size from more than 10 million inhabitants to fewer than 100,000, and across a wide range of income levels (from GNI per capita of $12,616 or more to GNI per capita of $1,035 or less).
