Since the first International Conference on Learning Cities, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), as the coordinating body of the Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), has been preparing for the second Conference. Based on a thorough evaluation of proposals, Mexico City has been selected to host this event. Mexico City has been a steadfast supporter of lifelong learning for all. Having participated in UNESCO’s piloting of the Key Features of Learning Cities, Mexico City recognizes the importance of building learning cities and affirms the value of using the Key Features as a monitoring tool to identify strengths and weaknesses of potential learning cities.
The second Conference will act as an inspiration for other cities in the world to becoming learning cities, with the overall aim to provide a platform for stakeholders to share best practices in building learning cities and to take stock of progress in the expansion of the GNLC. It is expected that about five-hundred delegates from over one-hundred UNESCO Member States and 23 collaborating partners of the GNLC will participate in the Conference.
To prepare for the Conference, UIL will act as secretariat, working closely with the Mexican National Commission for UNESCO and the Ministry of Education of Mexico City, with the support of UNESCO Headquarters. The Conference will be held in the second quarter of 2015 over a 3 day period.
