The 33rd May Annual International Educational Conference was organized by the Faculty of Education and Behavioral Sciences of Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia. Attended by 150 researchers, the Annual Conference took place from 8 to 9 May 2015. It provided a platform for researchers, policymakers and practitioners to discuss and share their ideas, research outcomes and experiences.
Representing UIL, Madhu Singh, Senior Programme Specialist, highlighted the mutual focus of lifelong learning and quality education for sustainable development. Universities, she emphasized, need to break the link between social exclusion, lack of education and poverty. This entails offering marginalized people alternative routes into higher education and universities; improving qualifications for professional courses in sustainable development; and systematically developing learning outcomes-based approaches at all levels of the lifelong learning educational system. Other areas of focus of the conference interventions included leadership, management and improving teacher education.
UIL is collaborating with Bahir Dar University on Bahir Dar’s Learning City programme, which aims to tackle some of the problems facing the city, including socio-economic and gender inequalities, youth unemployment, adult illiteracy, insufficient access to affordable ICT tools and services, and environmental degradation.
