Lifelong learning is key to solving global challenges and is therefore integral to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), defined by UNESCO as ‘education for social transformation with the goal of creating more sustainable societies’ (UNESCO, 2012, p 33).

In many parts of the world, however, ESD is still predominantly taught in formal education and schooling and not in the wider community. To address this, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) hosted a virtual session on 19 May 2021, ‘ESD in lifelong learning’, as part of the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development in Berlin, Germany. Speakers from Australia, Colombia, the Republic of Korea, and the Seychelles contributed to the session.
