At the upcoming World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (Nagoya, Japan, 10-12 November 2014), UIL and Okayama City will co-host a workshop entitled ‘Local Communities in Action: Lifelong Learning for Sustainable Development’.
Through this workshop, we intend to raise the profile of community-based learning spaces and centres among the stakeholders of education for sustainable development. It is also intended to place community-based learning spaces within the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development and the Nagoya Statement, both of which will feed into the post-2015 sustainable development goals.
UIL helped to organise two recent international gatherings to build commitments to community learning centres. Emerging from these were two documents – the Jakarta Statement – Nurturing a Care, Fair and Share Society through CLCs and the Okayama Commitment 2014 – Promoting ESD beyond DESD through Community-Based Learning. These will be presented by the governments of Indonesia and Okayama City to the workshop in Nagoya.
