Analphabétismes et alphabétisations (au pluriel) (Illiteracies and Literacies (Plural))

  • August 1993

International Literacy Year, 1990, was one of those (sadly increasingly rare) occasions on which we were able to mark that intrepid achievement – access to the written word – of many millions of men and women in the course of the century now coming to a close. Literacy has been integral to my professional duties. Working for an international organization, UNESCO, I have been actively involved in this field – as an actor; as a ‘demonstrator’ addressing real-life issues on the ground; as a witness or observer; even as an organizer of meetings, symposia and congresses such as the one initiated by the Shah of Iran in 1965 that brought together all of the world’s ministers of education in Tehran. I should nonetheless specify that my activities, whether as an ‘actor’ or ‘demonstrator’, have always been undertaken in the context of village collectives in countries that we have agreed to call the “Third World”, which has not prevented me from fulfilling my role as a advisor to various ruling bodies.
