Webinar: How prison libraries support rehabilitation efforts

On 3 February 2021, as part of a series of webinars organized by the UNESCO Chair in Applied Research for Education in Prisons (Canada), in collaboration with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and the Institut de coopération pour l’éducation des adultes (ICÉA, Canada), a webinar will take place on how prison libraries can support the rehabilitation of the approximately 11 million incarcerated worldwide.
Having free access to library resources is crucial for prisoners’ personal development, well-being and, ultimately, rehabilitation. The webinar will provide a global overview of the possible impact and transformational potential of providing prison library services and reading-based activities to inmates. Regional examples will underline and highlight experiences from various countries. Among other issues, presenters will showcase the ways in which prison libraries and literacy services provided by community organizations can play an important role in furthering prisoners’ education, and on minimizing the negative impact of incarceration on families.
Participants will have the opportunity to engage with representatives of prison library services from around the world who are actively working to better the learning conditions of inmates. They will also learn how the current health crisis impacted their programmes, and what solutions have been implemented to date.
The event is open to all interested.
