On 3 December 2013, the Mayor of Hamburg, Mr Olaf Scholz, visited the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning and met with Director Arne Carlsen, to discuss new modes of collaboration.

The City of Hamburg has been a key partner of UIL for more than sixty years, not only hosting the institution but also cooperating on numerous initiatives in the field of lifelong learning, including the ongoing research partnership with the University of Hamburg.

Mr Scholz expressed that the City of Hamburg was proud to host UIL and commended UIL for its excellent work over the years. He highlighted the importance of enhancing the competences and qualifications of youth and adults, in particular, those without a formal education qualification, and the integration of migrants in the labour market and society, and enhancing  literacy and other basic skills. Mr Scholz expressed particular interest in exploring the use of Information and Communication Technologies and Open Education Resources to improve the quality and relevance of formal education.

Mr Carlsen responded that UIL is grateful for the support of the City of Hamburg and that he welcomed even stronger cooperation with the City.
