on the occasion of the general meeting of the Global Alliance for Literacy, 10 September 2019, UNESCO, Paris
Contributing in a coordinated and effective way to the sharing of good practice in the implementation of policies and strategies to fight against illiteracy on a global scale – that is indeed the mission of the Global Alliance for Literacy. A mission that my country fully supports and to which I extend my strong encouragement!
This mission, it must be emphasized, is ours. It is part of our struggle to improve the skills of the vulnerable of our societies, and to empower them, as part of a vision of inclusive education for the social and professional integration of young people and women.
If, as Nelson Mandela has said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," literacy constitutes its "ammunition".
That is to underline the important place of the Global Alliance for Literacy in our collective efforts towards emancipation. It plays an essential role in the achievement of SDG 4 by our states and governments!
Finally, the principles on which the Alliance rests reflect the noble nature of its work and should command both our full consideration and our complete respect.
