On 17 September 2022, the Kingdom of Morocco, the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) will host a side event entitled “Transforming education and promoting sustainable development” as part of the Solutions Day of the Transforming Education Summit at UN-Headquarters in New York.
The event will provide a platform for discussion on holistic approaches to educational reform, from the perspective of lifelong learning as a lever for the transformation of education in the service of sustainable development. It will address, in particular, challenges and opportunities for the African continent, with the aim of mobilizing international partners to support and finance country strategies for education and sustainable development. Activities for youth empowerment and capacity building for education for sustainable development (ESD) will be presented, as will initiatives and good practice on environmental and climate action. Moreover, the Marrakech Framework for Action, adopted at the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII) in June 2022, and its implementation, will be discussed. As a key recommendation of the Marrakech Framework for Action, plans for the establishment of an African Institute for Lifelong Learning will be presented, with proposals for country membership and partner mobilization considered.
