Generating enthusiasm for lifelong learning
To compete in this fast-changing world, Gyumri aspires to be a forward-looking city and to strengthen bonds with all stakeholders to build its learning city initiative.
Vision and motivation
Gyumri views lifelong learning as the foundation for sustainable social, economic and environmental development, which is vital to every individual. The city is working to enable all of its citizens to learn throughout their lives and has prioritized expanding lifelong learning opportunities with a view to sustain economic growth.
Challenges and goals
As a member of the UNESCO GLNC, Gyumri is committed to tackling the following challenges:
- Closing the skills gap and preparing its citizens for dynamic and fast-changing industries.
- Addressing the employment mismatch of human resources and industry requirements.
- Developing a qualified labour force.
Plan and implementation
Gyumri wants to build enthusiasm for lifelong learning and has therefore organized a series of events to achieve this. Learning festivals, seminars and celebrations have proven to be effective, and the municipality is committed to keeping the momentum to participate in these events going.
The city also plans to increase youth participation and encourage young people to obtain the skills and knowledge they need to satisfy market needs. One way of achieving this is by collaborating with stakeholders from various sectors, including a productive partnership with Gyumri Technology Center (GTC), to train young people with modern IT skills to prepare them for the emerging high-tech industry in the city.
In future, Gyumri will work with local NGOs, research institutes and the municipal government to develop its learning city initiative.
A proverb says it is important not to give someone a fish to eat, but to teach him how to fish for himself. I believe Gyumri youth has the knowledge, innovative attitude and creativity needed to develop a stronger, healthier society.
