Following the Regional CONFINTEA VI follow-up meeting in Mexico in May 2011, and in order to contribute to the pursuance of the objectives and strategies discussed there, the National Institute for Adult Education (INEA) in Mexico suggested the creation of an Observatory for Adult Education for the region of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Observatory will monitor policies for adult education and will provide feedback to policy makers and other stakeholders for defining and implementing those policies, as well as to academics and participants in the field, through the integration, analysis and dissemination of information.
To create and maintain the observatory, INEA and UNESCO hope to procure the collaboration of the 33 Latin American and Caribbean Member States, as well as liaising with international actors such as the Organization of Iberoamerican States (OEI), the Council of Adult Education in America (CEAAL) and the Caribbean Regional Council for Adult Education (CARCAE).
The draft concept of the Observatory will be further discussed at UIL on the first week of June 2012, while the related website will be designed in the second semester of the year. It is expected that the Observatory will start operating in December 2012.
