
Peter Jarvis is Emeritus Professor of Continuing Education at the University of Surrey, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the founding editor of the International Journal of Lifelong Education. He has been an eminent advocate for adult education and lifelong learning over many years and has published an impressive series of books and papers on these subjects. Professor Jarvis has just completed editing The Routledge International Handbook on Learning, a companion volume to The Routledge International Handbook on Lifelong Learning published in 2009. Some of his other recent publications are: Learning to be a Person in Society (2009), and Lifelong Learning and the Learning Society (2008). He has received six honorary doctorates for his innovative work.
As part of UIL’s activities to develop new thinking on learning, after the impact of the Faure Report on “Learning to Be” (1972) and the Delors Report “Learning: The Treasure within” (1996), the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning has invited Professor Jarvis to give a public lecture on the topic “Learning to Do”. The lecture will take place on Wednesday 18 January 2012, from 16:00 to 17:30 at the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, Feldbrunnenstrasse 58, 20148 Hamburg, Germany. It will be open to staff, interns, UIL scholarship-holders and UIL guests, as well as to the general public.
